Unlike their Kampala counterparts, teachers up-country keep away from duty stations on first day of industrial action as minister insists govt is not aware of the strike.
Several districts reported varying levels of disruptions to teaching yesterday as a two-day strike called by the Uganda National Teachers Union (Unatu) took effect.
In Kampala, at the government Media Centre, the line minister, Ms Jessica Alupo, said she was not aware the strike was going ahead while Unatu said they could not adequately measure the level of success or failure of the industrial action.
The latest sit-down was called as a continuation in a series that started almost five years ago over teachers’ pay and general welfare. Yesterday’s strike comes days after private schools implementing universal education but accuse the government of being slow at remitting capitation grants threatened to close their facilities.
